What We Ask of Our Members

We believe in being upfront. Being part of the Vancouver Police Pipe Band is incredibly rewarding, but it requires dedication. Here's what membership involves:

Weekly practice attendance (rehearsals are typically one evening per week at a central location)

✓ Commitment to performances throughout the year (especially May-October peak season)

✓ Dedication to maintaining and improving your musical skills through personal practice

✓ Respect for the band's traditions, standards, and code of conduct

Teamwork, reliability, and punctuality - your bandmates count on you

✓ Flexibility for weekend performances and occasional travel

Sound demanding? It is. But our members will tell you it's worth every minute. The experiences, friendships, pride in performance, and sense of belonging make it one of the most rewarding commitments you'll ever make.

 FAQs

  • No. While we are affiliated with the Vancouver Police Department, membership is open to civilian musicians from all backgrounds. However, because we represent the Department and access secure facilities, all members are required to pass a police background check before joining.

  • We have a simple two-step process to ensure it is a great fit for both you and the band.

Step 1: Come to a Practice
Contact us to arrange a visit to one of our rehearsals. This allows you to meet the band and for us to assess your playing abilities.

    Step 2: Security Clearance
Once we agree to move forward, you will be required to pass a police background check. Upon clearance, you will be officially welcomed into the band.

  • We rehearse weekly, typically one evening per week for 2-3 hours. Performance frequency varies throughout the year, with our busiest season being May through October. We understand members have commitments outside the band and work to accommodate schedules where possible.

  • There is a nominal annual membership fee to cover some band operations. The band supplies all uniforms, covers international travel expenses for performances and trips, and provides reeds and pipe bags as a perk of membership.

  • We have members ranging from young adults to retirees. Our band includes people at various life stages - students, working professionals, and retired members. If you can commit to the requirements and play your instrument, age is just a number.

  • We practice in Burnaby. Specific location details and practice schedule will be shared once you apply.
